Successful aircraft maintenance depends on many variables.  One of those variables is the tools used to get the job done.  When most people hear the word “tool,” they immediately think of the aircraft maintenance tech’s toolbox with wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, hammers…  I could go on, but you already know what’s in a toolbox.

In fact, the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) software that an airline uses to plan, coordinate, and monitor that maintenance activity is just as important of a tool as anything in that toolbox.

You know what’s different about a hammer and MRO software?

The user experience with a hammer is dead simple.  Anyone can pick up a hammer, figure out how to hold it in their hands, and quickly work out what it’s used for and how to use it.

Most MRO software can’t make that claim.  Most MRO software is ridiculously complicated with lots of buttons and multiple screens – so much so that they require significant training just to figure them out.

When did you last hear “Our MRO software isn’t complicated enough!” or “We love the fact that our MRO software is really complicated.”

You never will, because nobody wants to deal with complicated – there’s just not enough time for it. In fact, what you probably hear is more like “You need to get this plane out by 0600” or maybe even “Why are we still taking maintenance delays every morning?”

You don’t need that hammer to also have screwdrivers built into it any more than you need your MRO software to display confusing or unrelated things when you’re just trying to complete a task. It should be easy to use, just like the hammer.

There’s NO REASON why MRO software has to be complicated.
